Dragon Eye
It’s here! I’ve started!

yarn haul
I’m so glad that I decided to switch projects because this one is fuuuuunnnnn. Not only is the pattern engaging but the yarn is constantly changing colors so it’s a surprise how every square will turn out.
As a knitter, I’ve always been disappointed by variegated yarns because they look so pretty in their skeins and then when you knit them into something they’re just splotchy. The color pools so you lose the pretty multicolor effect. At best you get stripes. (These days people use “planned pooling” to make interesting patterns but that’s not what I’m talking about! In my day all pooling was accidental and looked bad.)
Anyway, the great thing about crochet is that you can make things that are small and nonlinear, so that the repeats in the yarn colors don’t get a chance to stack on top of each other! And that is why this blanket is bringing me so much joy. Each square comes out with a gorgeous blend of colors that make it look like stained glass.
Some of the yarn suggested in the pattern doesn’t seem to be made anymore, but Red Heart “roll with it melange” is still around so I got the colors called for in the pattern, plus a bonus one that I liked the look of. That one, Show Time, has turned out to be my favorite.

yes good
It’s interesting how totally different these two squares are coming out. I could probably make all the squares out of this yarn and it would turn out just as diverse as if I used different yarns.

Catwalk and Autograph are showing promise, though I feel like Autograph is kind of dark.

no thank you
I’m not liking Curtain Call at all. The popcorns look like tiny little meatballs which is NOT the look I’m going for. I’ll give it another chance in case other parts of the color pattern come out better, but I’m not really feeling the reds. Too earthy to vibe with the other yarns.
I’m thinking I may get some Paparazzi, which seems more in keeping with the Show Time color scheme.

For the contrasting color, which is one round in each square/triangle, I’m using Lion Brand Ice Cream in, I think, Parfait but of course I lost the wrapper before I wrote it down. It’s similar colors to Show Time but brighter.

you know what else everyone likes? parfaits
The black is Caron Simply Soft because I can’t stand the way Red Heart Super Saver feels, and also it looked too fuzzy and the Caron makes a crisper outline. But really any worsted weight black yarn would do (keeping it acrylic so that it will all wash the same, hopefully).
The blanket, as written, is constructed of 24 squares in two colors and 48 triangles in four. I’m just going to experiment with my colors and see what I want to do. Maybe I’ll make the whole thing in Show Time and Paparazzi, or maybe I’ll throw some Catwalk in there somewhere. Maybe Curtain Call will redeem itself, who knows? I’m just happy as a pig in poop to finally get to play with variegated yarns the way I’ve always wanted to.
